Ajwain  is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae. The small, oval-shaped, seed-like fruits  of the plant are pale brown schizocarps, which resemble the seeds of other plants in the family Apiaceae such as caraway, cumin and fennel.[6] They have a bitter and pungent taste, with a flavor similar to anise and oregano. They smell like thyme because they also contain thymol, but they are more aromatic and less subtle in taste, as well as being somewhat bitter and pungent. Even a small number of fruits tend to dominate the flavor of a dish.

Features & Uses

  • Ajwain tastes similar to thyme or oregano and  usually used to add stronger flavor to dishes like curries and fried food. In cooked form Ajwain adds its flavor gets more subtle and nuanced.
  • Ajwain seeds thymol, a phenol that gives the fruit which is used to treat digestive problems. Active enzymes in ajwain improve the flow of stomach acids, which can help to relieve indigestion, bloating, and gas. The plant can also help to treat peptic ulcers as well as sores in the esophagus, stomach, and intestines.
  • It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties and can help to fight the growth of bacteria and fungi. They may also help to fight bacteria like salmonella and E. coli, which can lead to food poisoning and other stomach issues.
  • Ajwain is used as an ayurvedic remedy to provide relief from coughing as well as clear mucus from your nose, both of which make breathing easier. It may also help to widen the bronchial tubes, which can help those with asthma.
